You may have heard the word CrossFit being thrown around in the fitness circles for some time now. But for those who are new to this fitness craze it can be hard to wade through all the jargon to understand what exactly CrossFit is, decide whether is the right program for you and to know what to look for when finding the right gym to start your CrossFit journey.

What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program, focusing on basic gymnastic skills, Olympic lifting and high intensity cardio exercises. Now I know some of you just got super excited by that last statement, but I am guessing there are a lot of you already hovering your cursor over the red exit button. Don’t be intimidated. CrossFit is universally scalable, so all exercises can be modified to suit your fitness level. So, keep reading. There are lots of benefits to starting a CrossFit program and I promise you won’t be sorry!

CrossFit is designed to transform your body by incorporating target-based exercises into a challenging and varied workout and then changing up this workout each day (affectionately called a WOD or Work Out of the Day) to ensure all over functional strength. Functional strength is the strength needed to get through everyday activities, like lifting your kids/grandkids, carrying your groceries and climbing a ladder.  When they say the workouts are ‘challenging’ they mean challenging for your level.

What does it involve?

Everybody does the same WOD whether you’re male, female, a grandparent or a teenager. Can’t do a squat with the a 50kg weight just yet? Then just use the bar without weights. Maybe you can’t do a full 100 jumps with a jump rope now… but give it time. The point is the workout needs to be challenging for you. As your fitness improves the intensity of your workout can increase until you are performing the exercises at the prescribed levels (set by your coaches).

Your workouts can be done either as a group workout in the CrossFit box (this what CrossFit gyms are called) or from your home if you can’t make it in every day. Boxes are literally that; four walls, no frills but packed with all the equipment the community needs to allow for dynamic group workouts. Workouts in the box are led by CrossFit Coaches and each session has time dedicated to either ensuring correct technique or pure strength movements (think squats or deadlifts).

What should you look for when choosing a CrossFit box?

Just like finding the right gym, finding the right CrossFit box is an important decision. This can ultimately determine the success of your CrossFit journey. Here are some of our thoughts on what you need to look for in a great box:

Knowledgeable Coaches

This is one of the most important things to look for in a box. Coaches who are top of their game are needed to make sure your technique is on point. This will allow you to reach your goals quicker and reduce the chances of injury. At Roar Fitness, our experienced coaches are approachable, passionate and supportive with each coach offering a unique style and set of skills resulting in a well-rounded team. Coaches are on site 6 days a week, to provide support and discuss your goals and advise on how to reach them. Boxes are staffed from 8am to 7pm (Monday through Tuesday), 8am to 4pm (Fridays) and 8am – 12pm on Saturdays.

Extra Support for Beginners

Starting CrossFit journey can be daunting and being thrown into a regular class is not always the best solution. At RFX CrossFit, we care about our community and want to give all newcomers the best shot at finding a fitness solution and experiencing all the benefits that result when your body is in peak physical condition. Which is why we have dedicated Beginners Programs with specially designed classes to offers extra support. These focus on ensuring good habits and proper form as well as highlighting the importance of mobility and nutrition.

Great Programming

A quality CrossFit box recognizes the value in structured programming that has an objective to meet the needs of different individuals. Not everyone will want to become a powerlifter. We understand that. That’s why we offer different programs. As well as the usual CrossFit mainstream, we also offer:

  • Engine – specially catered for those wanting to improve their capacity for work. Classes are designed to build endurance working the body through high volume movements while under fatigue.
  • 1-on-1 Foundations – This one-hour introductory class is a one-on-one session with one of our coaches. During the session, you will be taught the basics, your current level will be assessed, and you have the opportunity to have all your questions answered.
  • Olympic Lifting – designed to build a bigger, faster and stronger athlete these workouts combine Olympic and power lifting. This is not a quick fix. Rather, it commits you to a path of longer-term change and results.
  • Mobility – this one-hour class uses mobility drills to teach you to optimize your mobility, prevent injury and recover quicker.

Facilities

You can throw some fitness equipment into any room and call it a box but serious CrossFitters know just how important your training environment is. Boxes should be clean and tidy, well equipped and thoughtfully laid out.

Unlike other boxes around town, the Roar RFX CrossFit boxes are air-conditioned (for those like me who can’t handle working out in a furnace!) and also have access to showers for those who would prefer to get their workout in before heading to work. Onsite Crèches make it easier for Mums and Dads to fit in a session around their busy schedules.

Your CrossFit membership also includes access to our gym facilities including a 24-hour gym floor fitted with state-of-the-art equipment. You can try one of our Group Fitness Classes or get in a great cardio workout in either of the indoor or outdoor 25m heated pools. When you’re done, warm down and unwind in the spa, sauna or steam room.

Strong, fun and supportive community

This may be last on list, but it is definitely one of the most important. The CrossFit community is one the biggest advantages to being a CrossFitter. You are going to sweat, cry and quite possibly throw up together… but most of all you are going to support and help each other to achieve results. Plus, all experienced CrossFitters remember what it’s like as a beginner so don’t be surprised if you find a long list of experienced members ready to take you under their wing, give you pointers and offer encouragement. The adage goes ‘Work together, Play together’. At Roar RFX CrossFit we are firm believers in this mantra and regularly organise community events where all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

CrossFit Boxes all over the place you just have to Google and you will find plethora of them. So why is Roar fitness RFX CrossFit so popular? Because we are not your average CrossFit box!
