You may have heard the word CrossFit being thrown around in the fitness circles for some time now. But for those who are new to this fitness craze it can be hard to wade through all the jargon to understand what exactly CrossFit is, decide whether is the right program for you and to know what to look for when finding the right gym to start your CrossFit journey. What is CrossFit? CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program, focusing on basic gymnastic skills, Olympic lifting and high intensity cardio exercises. Now I know some of you just got super excited by that last statement, but I am guessing there are a lot of you already hovering your cursor over the red exit button. Don’t be intimidated. CrossFit is universally scalable, so all exercises can be modified to suit your fitness level. So, keep reading. There are lots of benefits to starting a CrossFit program and I promise you won’t be sorry! CrossFit is designed to transform your body by incorporating target-based exercises into a challenging and varied workout and then changing up this workout each day (affectionately called a WOD or Work Out of the Day) to ensure all over functional strength. Functional strength is the strength needed to get through everyday activities, like lifting your kids/grandkids, carrying your groceries and climbing a ladder. When they say the workouts are ‘challenging’ they mean challenging for your level. What does it involve? Everybody does the same WOD whether you’re male, female, a grandparent or a teenager. Can’t do a squat with the a 50kg weight just yet? Then just use the bar without weights. Maybe you can’t do a full 100 jumps with a jump rope now… but give it time. The point is the workout needs to be challenging for you. As your fitness improves the intensity of your workout can increase until you are performing the exercises at the prescribed levels (set by your coaches). Your workouts can be done either as a group workout in the CrossFit box (this what CrossFit gyms are called) or from your home if you can’t make it in every day. Boxes are literally that; four walls, no frills but packed with all the equipment the community needs to allow for dynamic group workouts. Workouts in the box are led by CrossFit Coaches and each session has time dedicated to either ensuring correct technique or pure strength movements (think squats or deadlifts). What should you look for when choosing a CrossFit box? Just like finding the right gym, finding the right CrossFit box is an important decision. This can ultimately determine the success of your CrossFit journey. Here are some of our thoughts on what you need to look for in a great box: Knowledgeable Coaches This is one of the most important things to look for in a box. Coaches who are top of their game are needed to make sure your technique is on point. This will allow you to reach your goals quicker and reduce the chances of injury. At Roar Fitness, our experienced coaches are approachable, passionate and supportive with each coach offering a unique style and set of skills resulting in a well-rounded team. Coaches are on site 6 days a week, to provide support and discuss your goals and advise on how to reach them. Boxes are staffed from 8am to 7pm (Monday through Tuesday), 8am to 4pm (Fridays) and 8am – 12pm on Saturdays.
